Thermocouple Cable

When constructing a Thermocouple circuit it’s wise to construct the length component of the circuit with a compensating or extension cable. Generally constructed by using an M.I. Thermocouple cable which is in direct contact with the heat source and extends to a point where compensating or extension cable can be used at a lower temperature.

Care must be taken from this point to maintain the same emf of the hot end junction to that of the extension cable used, it is best to use the same material as the Thermocouple cable used in the hot end. It is all so recommended that all junctions contain the same emf as the conductor, The Thermocouple plug and jacks supplied by D&N Engineering conform to the compensation nature of the Thermocouple cable used.

When choosing the temperature cable care must be taken into consideration, when choosing compensating grade cable and extension grade cable. Compensating cable can be used as the hot end junction at the point of measurement and be used as and extension over a long run. Thermocouple Extension cable prefix (EX) can only be used as and extension to attach to a Thermocouple compensating junction.

There are many types of insulation used in extension or compensating cable all with varying degrees of thermal resistance and tensile strength. When selecting an extension cable a few factors must be taken into account.

Moisture – If moisture is present in Thermocouple extension or compensating cable the applied temperature to the hot end may vary due to insulation breakdown at various points along the installation.
Abrasion – Harsh environments that involve movement and vibration often can cause insulation breakdown resulting in shorts. It is highly recommended to use double insulation and armoured cable in the environments.
Flexing – The Continuous movement to an extension cable can cause it to fracture within its insulation a multicore cable is best suited to these types of environments.
Chemical & Abrasive attacks – The insulation chosen should reflect the environment and of spray from the machinery around the cable. In heavy chemical environments, it is recommended that compensating cables be housed inducting of some form.
Thermal resistance – Temperature extremes are the common cause of failure. Insulation is specified and rated for maximum continuous use. The following chart shows a list of the stocked compensating cable that D&N Engineering Supplies carries for Large Quantities Please order 7 days in advance.
